A short detox diet is not something I usually believe in, generally because the ’short’ often stands for ’short cut’ or ‘cheat’. A body detox program where you are asked to do nothing other than mix a strange potion from a bottle or simply add a few vegetables to your current diet are not good.

They will at best have no effect; at worst they could upset your digestion and put you off detox altogether. However, a healthy 48-hour plan will give your body a real break. It will let you see just how good you can feel, and it will show you that detoxing really is worthwhile.

So, on one of those rare occasions when you find you have 48 hours to concentrate on number one, lock the doors, put the answer phone on and switch off the mobile. This two-day plan will transform you from a tired and worn-out ‘human doing’ on Friday afternoon to a revitalized, refreshed and regenerated ‘human being’ on Monday morning. Of course, if you have time off during the week, you can just adjust the days, e.g. Tuesday evening through to Friday morning.

All of us need some downtime. This is where recreation comes in. Many people think that recreation automatically means an outdoor activity such as sports or hiking.

But recreation can be anything that you enjoy doing. It can be as simple as reading a book or magazine or even spending some quality time with family and friends. You can go to a museum and look at art or do some poster printing. Recreation can also mean playing a videogame or watching television. Some people spend their downtime primping. They treat themselves to a home spa, soak their feet, put on a facemask and then do their nails. Some people listen to soothing music. Tune in to your favorite radio station or pop in a compact disc.

Some people like completing crossword puzzles. Everyone needs a break, especially in the fast times we live in. So make sure that you get your downtime.
