Have you ever wanted to start your own garden but weren’t sure how to go about it? Have you ever bought a flower, taken it home and thought to yourself “I should grow these myself”? Have you ever paid for your produce at the grocery store and thought “why don’t I ever grow my own? It would save me money and they would taste better”? Have you ever thought about starting an herb garden to save money? Have you ever looked around your home and wondered where your garden would be placed? The good news is that you can grow your own garden just about anywhere you want, even inside!
Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Look at your current space with a critical eye. If you do not have an outdoor space for your garden (even for containers) you will have to limit yourself to plants that you can grow indoors, at least until you move to someplace new. If you have a yard, you will need to decide how much space to assign to your garden. The amount of space you have for your new garden will help you decide exactly what you can grow and how extensive your brand new garden will eventually be. Your small garden in your kitchen, for example, won’t be a good place for growing things like fruits, vegetables or viney plants. Good gardening requires the gardener to be patient.
It takes a long time before the plants send up shoots and you can see your hard work literally come to life–you’ll just have to be patient while you wait for that to happen. The only way to skip over having to wait for this to pass is to buy your plants already blooming from a gardening department or nursery. If you don’t want to spend the money on “baby” plants, you need to have patience and continue to keep your garden nourished and taken care of while you wait to see the results of your efforts. Don’t worry if your plants take a long time to grow–it can take weeks or even months for you to see any real activity on the top of the soil. Start simply. You might be dreaming of having your entire yard filled with blooming and blossoming plants. If you’ve never grown your own garden before, you’ll want to start with a plant or two. This will save you from putting a lot of time and effort into something that you ultimately end up not enjoying. Gardening takes time, patience and commitment. Would you marry a person you’d never been out with? Why would you dedicate your entire yard to vegetables if you hadn’t ever grown a single strawberry?
Starting a garden is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. If you allow yourself the time to learn about gardening before you begin, there is no reason your garden won’t be plentiful. Delight in spending time in your garden! It’s a great excuse to get outside and play!
